What is a DMCA takedown?

A Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown is a formal request to remove or disable content that has been posted online. It is used by copyright holders to protect intellectual property from infringement. The DMCA also provides legal protection for website operators who comply with the requirements of the notice, including disabling access to allegedly infringing material.
